Your mulank (root number) is the day of the month reduced to a single digit — the 29th becomes 2+9=11, then 1+1=2. Your bhagyank (destiny number) reduces the whole date, day and month and year together, so it changes far less often between people born the same day. They answer different questions: mulank is the disposition you lead with, bhagyank the longer arc you are working along.
Vedic numerology maps every digit to a graha: 1 Sun, 2 Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn, 9 Mars. That mapping is what connects a number back to something a chart can actually check — a mulank of 8 points at Saturn, and whether Saturn is strong or afflicted in your own chart matters far more than the number itself.
It runs on your date and nothing else. It cannot see your birth time or your birthplace, which means it cannot know your ascendant, your house placements or which dasha you are running — the three things that decide most of what a reading can honestly say.
