An auspicious window is selected from the panchang's five limbs — tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga and karana — with the inauspicious stretches of the day, Rahu Kaal chief among them, excluded. Different ceremonies want different combinations: a marriage muhurat and a housewarming muhurat are not looking for the same nakshatra, and a good date for one can be an ordinary date for the other.
A muhurat is chosen from the sky's condition on a given day, not from your chart. It can pick a clean day; it cannot override the dasha you are running or the transits sitting on your own houses. Classical practice uses both — the personal timing first, the muhurat to choose a good hour within it. Anyone promising that the right muhurat cancels a difficult period is selling certainty that the texts do not offer.
